How to Drive Safely on a Run-Flat Tyre After a Puncture

A tyre pressure warning on a run-flat-equipped BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Mini doesn't mean pull over immediately the way it would on a normal tyre — but it doesn't mean carry on as usual either. Run-flats buy you a window to get somewhere safe, not a way to ignore the puncture. Here's exactly what that window looks like and how to use it correctly.

What a Run-Flat Actually Does When Punctured

Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls built to support your vehicle's weight for a limited distance even after a total loss of air pressure, instead of collapsing like a standard tyre would. That's the entire purpose — it's an emergency mobility system, not a way to keep driving indefinitely on a flat.

The Speed and Distance Limit

Once a run-flat has lost pressure, the general manufacturer guidance is to keep speed under 80 km/h (50 mph) and cover no more than about 80 kilometres before stopping. These aren't conservative suggestions — beyond that speed or distance, the reinforced sidewall itself starts to break down from the heat and stress of supporting the car's weight without air, and the tyre can fail entirely rather than continuing to protect you.

What to Do the Moment the Warning Appears

  • Reduce speed gradually — don't brake hard, since handling is already affected.
  • Move out of fast lanes on highways like Sheikh Zayed Road or Emirates Road as soon as it's safe to do so.
  • Avoid sharp steering inputs; a deflated run-flat handles and grips noticeably differently than a normal tyre.
  • Head toward the nearest safe stopping point — home, office, or a parking area — rather than continuing your original route if it's far.
  • Call for mobile assistance rather than waiting until you're stranded on the shoulder.

Why You Shouldn't "Wait and See"

Because run-flats still drive reasonably normally at low speed even when flat, it's tempting to keep going until you reach your original destination. The problem is that every kilometre driven deflated adds heat damage to the sidewall — damage you often can't see from outside the tyre. This is also why, once a run-flat has been driven in a deflated state, most manufacturers advise against repairing it afterward: the internal structure may already be compromised even if the outside looks fine. The smarter move is to stop sooner, not later.

Don't Confuse This With a Normal Flat Tyre

If you're driving a vehicle with standard tyres, none of the run-flat allowances above apply — a fully deflated standard tyre should not be driven on at all, even briefly. If you're not sure whether your vehicle has run-flats, check your owner's manual or the tyre sidewall for markings like "RFT," "ZP," "RSC," or "SSR." When in doubt, treat it as a normal flat and stop immediately rather than assuming you have the extra margin a run-flat provides.

What Happens After You Stop

Once you're safely stopped, a technician needs to assess whether the tyre — having already been driven deflated — is a candidate for repair or needs replacement. In most cases involving a run-flat driven while flat, replacement is the honest recommendation.
